Having made a name for themselves as Sydney’s hardest working hardcore outfit since their inception in early ‘99, Irrelevant slipped away, quietly into the night in later part of 2002, leaving behind a bequest of intense local shows and an inroad of big name touring across the country. While the fevered response from fans of Irrelevant assured them they had a segway back into the light at any point, the boys decided to take some much needed time off to reflect the direction of the band and themselves.
A few line-up changes and a refraction of aural outlay saw Irrelevant make the most of their time off, emerging in June ’04 with a vehement drive to make the local scene pay attention to their newly grasped evolution; a shift in sonic identity that is anything but the band’s name-sake and a triumphant and innovative push for Australian indie music.
Shortly after their re-emergence, Irrelevant began work on their forthcoming debut full-length, Ascension. Collaborating with Phil McKellar, who has produced albums for Grinspoon, The Mark of Cain and countless other stalwart Aussie acts, has further tightened the new Irrelevant sound to a shifting outrÈ of signature intensity and expanded vision.
Ascension, the end result, speaks for itself as a hallmark Australian rock album that fails to rest on any one path, offering, instead, a transcending of sounds and themes where emotion is as important as ability and fervour. An eclectic range of guitar sounds deriving fill from metal, hardcore, punk and the all-important Australian rock identity, satiate the consistently driving backbone in bass and percussion leaving Ascension with a motif all its own.
Irrelevant’s new foray into unchartered creative territory has the band building an all-new identity off their self-reflective approach to their craft. Moving away from pigeonholed sounds, the boys are looking to expand beyond their backyard with a view to take their music to the international stage, and with all the right tools behind them; it’s only a matter of time before Irrelevant is leading an international charge of Aussie proud rock.
