Beards, The www.thebeards.com.au
The Beards are a bearded four-piece from Adelaide, South Australia, whose catalogue consists entirely of songs about beards and having beards. Onstage, The Beards preach about the virtues of having a beard with near-militant intensity. The beardless members of the crowd may find themselves singled out and chastised for their lack of facial hair as The Beards sing crowd favourites like Growing a Beard, Beard Revolution and No Beard, No Good, while those with beards may be brought onstage as an example of what having a beard is all about. But as hilarious as this eccentric outfit are, they can be equally appreciated for their musical originality, instrumental ability and professionalism.
With styles ranging from folk to rock to jazz to metal, The Beards prove themselves as talented musicians and diverse songwriters. The rhythm section of Nathaniel Beard, John Beardman and Facey McStubblington is complemented by the immensely talented front man, Johann Beardraven, who at any typical Beards show can be seen jumping from vocals to saxophone to drums to guitar.
Formed in 2005, The Beards have gained a rapidly expanding cult following in Adelaide, and the combination of a relentless touring schedule and dedicated efforts in expanding their endeavours has seen The Beards gain a strong interstate and global fan-base. The band’s list of high-profile shows include the Adelaide Big Day Out in both 2008 and 2009; support shows with Tripod, 80s childhood icon Peter Combe and UK comedian Stephen K Amos; as well as drawing a capacity crowd to Adelaide’s Governor Hindmarsh hotel for the recording of their first ever live DVD. 2009 saw the release of the band’s second full-length album Beards, Beards, Beards, recorded at Adelaide’s renowned Mixmasters Studio. An extensive Australian album-launch tour followed in July, and the release of the album’s lead single If Your Dad Doesn’t Have A Beard You’ve Got Two Mums to national radio play on Triple J has raised the band’s profile even further.
One of The Beards’ crowning achievements came in May 2009, when they headed to Anchorage, Alaska to attend the 2009 World Beard and Moustache Championships. The band’s performance at the opening ceremony of the championships was a huge success and one of the highlights of the event, as their pro-beard anthems were cheered along by a boisterous crowd consisting of the world’s best beards. As well as this, the band was proud to lead The Australian Bushrangers, the first ever Australian team to compete in the WBMC, and in the process gained significant national and international media coverage.
Bearded men, put down those trimmers – the Beard Revolution has come.
