On February 28th Fire! Santa Rosa, Fire! are set to release their highly anticipated debut album Sea Priest.

Sea Priest is simply put, electric. The culmination of a solid year of touring nationally off the back of the single War Coward opened the band up to a wider sonic palette previously thought unimaginable even by its own members. The album is a document to the times, a youthful urgency paired with a confidence rarely found in current music.

After being Unearthed by Triple J in 2008 as a Next Crop artist to watch and playing Homebake, Laneway and Big Day Out festivals, Fire! Santa Rosa, Fire! returned to their hometown of Adelaide, South Australia with the blueprint of what would become Sea Priest. Working relentlessly with engineer Matt Hills, the band assembled record in between touring and supporting such varied groups and musicians such as Sia, Born Ruffians and Bertie Blackman. Previously known for his work with Wolf & Cub on their album Vessels, his relentless and methodical production helped the capture not only the band’s live intensity, but also a quieter subtly to the release. Mirko Vogel, known for his production credits on I Heart Hiroshima’s latest record The Rip, was brought in to complete the finished record.

Lyrically both unnerving and soothing, the record contains tales of resistance and defeat, a candid encounter with the spiritual. Song titles such as ‘Witch House’, ‘Dogma Don’t’ and ‘Little Cowboys, Bad Hombres’ can only hint what could come, a musical earnestness that saw the band nominated for the QANTAS Spirit of Youth Awards in 2009. David Williams and Caitlin Duff provide an almost John and June Carter match in their dual vocal roles, complimented by the work of Samuel Stearne on drums, Josh Flavel on bass, Artyom Zinoviev on synth and Nathaniel Morse on second guitar.

David Williams spoke of the clash of new and old ideas behind the recording, stating “The album seems like it’s been a long time in the construction, with a lot of the songs making up the final track list having been in our repertoire for at least 2 years. On the other hand, with the addition of Nathaniel (a new member since last September), we were able to marry these stalwarts of our set with a few newer pieces that were put together both quickly. We’re really happy with the overall result.”

With the release of Sea Priest, Fire! Santa Rosa, Fire! will undertake an east coast national tour to promote and play songs off their new album. Don’t miss out on the most assured independent release of 2010.
